Summer Master Class 2018

July 13 – 15 at Higgins Lake

Focus on collaboration between Director and Actor, led by Penny Notter, and Costuming, led by Joy Butler

CTAM is dedicated to bringing you top notch education opportunities and we continue this trend with the planned summer Master Classes at the Ralph A. MacMullen Conference Center.  The location is centrally located in the state at Higgins Lake and offers the participant 14.5 hours of practical theatrical classes almost non-stop over the weekend of July 13 – 15.

The two simultaneous workshops will feature Actor & Director, led by Penny Notter from Grand Rapids Civic Theatre; and Costuming with Joy Butler from Bay City Players. Both instructors are well qualified, experienced practitioners of the craft with decades of practical experience and have been teaching these classes for years.

ACTOR & DIRECTOR: WORKING TOGETHER
with Penny Notter

Actor and Director: Working Together will be taught by Penny Notter, the recently retired Associate Director of Grand Rapids Civic Theatre (GRT). She was also the director of GRT’s School of Theatre. She had extensive experience as an actor and has directed dozens of shows, most at theatres in the Grand Rapids area. Penny received a BA in theatre from Indiana University and a MA with a focus on directing from Indiana State University. She has previously conducted workshops for CTAM and AACT. This master class is for both actors and directors. It will explore the relationships of actors and directors to each other and the preparation required by both to co-exist in a productive environment. During this class directors will have an opportunity to direct and actors will act. This class is about the collaboration needed for a successful production.

SO YOU’VE AGREED TO DESIGN COSTUMES – NOW WHAT?
with Joy Butler

So you’ve agreed to design costumes – now what? will explore the steps used to communicate through costume design and execution beginning with building a foundation through script analysis and building a production team. You will learn how to give the actor some of the tools needed to visually communicate his/her character, creating the look of an ensemble piece, and sourcing your ideas. Organizational tools and budget will also be considered. Joy has an MFA in theatre from Western Illinois University and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in several areas including history of theatre, costume design, costume construction, and costume crafts. Although she has worked extensively in educational and professional theatre, for the past several years she has been the volunteer chair of costumes at Bay City Players.

July 13 to 15, 2018 at Higgins Lake

Master Classes this summer to cover acting, directing and costuming!

Master Class location and registration details!

The class sessions will begin early Friday evening, July 13, and continue through Sunday morning, July 15. You will be done by noon!

Please note: Both instructors will ask that participants in their classes read a few plays before taking their class. You will receive a short list after you have registered.

The class registration fee is $85 for individual CTAM members and $95 for non-members. The fee for two nights lodging and four meals is $167 for a shared room (each person or $334 total for two) and $187 for one person in a room. The registration deadline is June 30 and there will be no refunds for the MacMullen lodging and meals fee after that date. Online registration will be available soon. Or you can contact Nancy Peska, Executive Secretary directly and register with her.

The RAM Center is located at 104 Conservation Drive, Roscommon, MI 48653. It is 1.5 miles east of US 27 and five miles west of I-75. If you go to the Department of Natural Resources website and click on the MacMullen Center on the left side, they provide maps and a delightful video showing you the facilities.

The rooms are often referred to as ‘dormitory style’ with two single beds per room; the bath is shared with the next two-bed room. You can pay extra for a single room, of course. The expensive amenities of a hotel are not present, such as making your bed and a candy kiss on your pillow!

If you wish to stay elsewhere in the area and just attend the Master Class, you must add a facility fee of $35 to the registration fee. If you want to share the family-style meals with everyone else, Nancy Peska can give you those additional prices. We try to be accommodating and make the weekend as affordable as possible.

Things to bring: A small fan for your room if the nights get sticky, your favorite bug spray for the campfires, and a flashlight to keep Sasquatch at bay, should you encounter him/her on your way back from the evening beach fire!
